6th Grade Wheel Classes
The “wheel” classes are required exploratory classes. They are designed to introduce students to major topics within each of the classes. Students rotate through the classes during the course of the school year. For example, a student may start first quarter with health, and then rotate through the other courses in following quarters.
General Music
A wide range of musical topics are covered int his course. Students learn how to interpret and understand the musical language. Keyboards and choir chimes are used to explore melody, harmony, and rhythm as well as develop each student's musical skills. American popular songs, musical theater, and song of other cultures are studied as well as the families of musical instruments and the musical contributions of Gershwin. Students explore composition by writing a sound composition and by composing a piece for keyboards.
Art
This course allows students to apply knowledge learned in their core classes to their study of art; we are helping students understand the relationship among life, cultures, and art. The major areas of focus are: Ancient Greece and Rome, Folk Artists, Women Artists, and American Contemporary Artists. Students will have opportunities to express themselves and understand their visual world through writing, speaking, and creating 2-D and 3-Dart forms.
FACE
FACE will introduce you to the exiting field of Family and Consumer Education. This course will explore life skills you need to meet the challenges of caring for yourself, your family, and others.
Hands-on activities through food preparation and project construction will help you prepare to gain confidence in your abilities as well as prepare you to be a responsible family member. You will apply the skills of reading for technical information, writing, math through measurement and science by using various classroom activities such as cooking and/or sewing projects.
Tech Ed
Sixth grade Technology Education covers a very broad scope of technology in our world. You will explore the many areas of technology through the 14 different modules that will be available for you to do. These modules will take you to places that you have never thought of going. You will go to the moon, or witness an earthquake, or create your own dragster vehicle. You will learn what aerodynamics, pneumatics, manufacturing lines are and many more. Take a technology course; you never know how far you can go unless you have technology to help you along the way.
Computers
Upon completion of 6th grade Computers, the student will be able to independently log on to the network, navigate to appropriate network drives, start a program, key a document from copy, compose on-line, save, send and print work. The student will be able to complete a simple Internet search, evaluate web information, select and save appropriate research material. This will be compatible with Sun Prairie Middle School sequential writing and language expectations. The student will function as a responsible citizen in the computer lab, on the network and on the Internet.
The student will continue to develop individual speed and accuracy rates using proper technique and ergonomics. The student will demonstrate knowledge of network and Internet terminology. The student will identify state and federal laws governing Internet activity and define harassment, discrimination, vandalism, theft, profanity and obscenity. The student will be able to identify on-line examples pertaining to state and federal laws and other Internet safety as defined by the iSafe curriculum published by the Department of Justice.
Health
This course covers life skills such as decision-making, self-image, refusal skills, communication, and peer pressure. Students will be taught how these skills relate to relationships, human growth and development, drugs, alcohol, and tobacco.
Physical Education
The 6th grade physical education program is designed to meet the needs of physical fitness and motor skills of this age level and to help students acquire knowledge of physical, emotional and social growth of each individual student.
The 6th grade activities include: throwing and catching, soccer, track and field, physical fitness, paddle/racquet sports, social dance, basketball, floor hockey, volleyball, badminton, in-line and ice skating, lacrosse, ropes challenge course/problem solving-team-building.
Student are required to have physical eduction clothes to participate in activities, preferably shorts and T-shirt. Sweatpants and sweatshirts are acceptable.
