At SPHS we offer a wide variety of challenging Art courses to help you discover, develop and appreciate your creative talents in the visual arts. Art and design experiences and knowledge are a vital part of a growing number of careers you may be interested in for your future.
Art classes meet daily, and one-half credit may be earned in a semester for each class successfully completed. Grades are determined by rubrics that evaluate individual work, quizzes and a final exam. General supplies will be provided by the Art Department, but some supplies must be purchased from the Art Department, i.e. sterling silver, copper, matt boards, canvas, film, photo paper, etc.
When an advance class is not offered, the Art Teachers encourage students interested and skilled in specialized areas to repeat courses that will refine their skills and expand their knowledge by completing advanced projects. Students receive one-half credit and are allowed to repeat all art courses once, with teacher approval, with the exception of Art Exploration. Use the number of the course you are interested in repeating when filling in your schedule.

INTRODUCTION
Learning and understanding the visual arts gives a student a window onto the rich and interesting world around them, teaching them about their own history and culture, as well as those of other peoples. In a world in which information and ideas are often delivered visually, children need to learn how to analyze and judge the meaning of images and how to use them to communicate their own ideas. Art is a subject that appreciate differing points of view. These skills are particularly needed in the complex challenges of contemporary society.
