Middle School Mathematics

Middle School is grades 6th and 7th as a stepping stone to the upper middle school, CHUMS (Cardinal Heights Upper Middle Schoo). We have developed our Math curriculum with this in mind. We also work with the High School faculty to better prepare you for that transition.

6th Grade Math
Instruction and practice using a variety of problem solving strategies help students develop an understanding of increasingly difficult mathematical concepts.  Numeration, measurement, pre algebra concepts (e.g. fractions, %, decimals and ratios), geometry, data analysis/statistics and probability are the primary focus in sixth grade.  Students should be able to apply mathematical knowledge to other curricular areas and problem solving strategies to real-world problems using oral and written methods to explain their reasoning.  The use of calculators and computers to solve problems will strengthen the concept development.

7th Grade Math
Math is offered with the needs of every pupil in mind.  Mathematics is concerned with numbers, with ways of representing them, and with ways of operating upon them.  Our system for using numbers is a decimal system where each number has both digital and positional value.  The ways of thinking with numbers reflect the law of the operations we perform.  The major reasons for studying mathematics include:

  • To guide pupils in discovering the meaning, order, and logic of our decimal number system
  • To build a clear understanding of the operations
  • To develop problem solving ability
  • To develop skills for effective mental and written computations
  • To encourage growth of desirable attitudes and work habits in mathematics.

Course Length:  2 Semesters
