A very special ceremony was held at Sun Prairie High School on Friday, September 10, to dedicate the Sun Prairie High School flagpoles and commemorate the ninth anniversary of the tragic events of Sepetember 11, 2001. The flagpoles are dedicated to our heroes, members of all branches of military service and those who protect and serve within our community, including Police, Fire, and EMS workers.
A plaque representing all those to whom the flagpoles are dedicated will be permanently displayed on a column near the flagpoles. The plaque was paid for by a grant from the Sun Prairie Education Foundation. The grant was requested by Sun Prairie High School Teacher Janice Mertes who, with her students, coordinated the dedication and events to commemorate the anniversary of September 11th.
Mayor Chase gave the following eloquent talk to the students and others in attendance:
"As an alumnus of Sun Prairie High School this is a proud moment for me, as I am sure it is for other alumni and future alumni present here today. The emotion to feel at this time is pride.
The flags that are lifted over our heads today on this these flagpoles identify, “We the people ….”
Our United States flag, of stars and stripes, and the meaningful colors of red, white & blue.
Our Wisconsin flag of blue with the state seal and coat of arms depicting both our past and our future.
And the Sun Prairie High School flag representing out time-honored mascot of the Fighting Cardinal."
