Frequently Asked Questions

From time to time we get a little more comfortable than we should at ROSCO with regard to explaining who we are, how we work and things that we do.  Afterall, some of us have been here over 10 years now.  We apologize for this - especially to those of you who are new to Royal Oaks.  What we have done to help in making sure everyone is familiar with these things, and plenty of other questions that come up, we have assembled answers to a list of Frequently Asked Questions that we get.

If you have any other questions that aren't answered here, we would be happy to answer them.  Just give us a call, or drop us a line at roscorocket@gmail.com.

How do I join?
It’s easy!  Just fill out a membership form with your name, contact information, and e-mail.  We will e-mail the monthly meeting minutes, volunteer opportunities, and other important ROSCO information.

When are the meetings?
Meetings are held the 2nd Tuesday of each month (except December) in either the Media Room (Pit) or the Art Room.  Free childcare is available for children 2 and older!

Why should I go to the meetings?
  • The Principal, a Teacher Representative and a District Board Representative all provide information regarding what is happening at the school and within the district.
  • To find out what is happening with the ROSCO committees.
  • To find out what volunteer opportunities are available.
  • To discuss ideas on how to make Royal Oaks the best experience for everyone involved.
  • To discuss and vote how money is allocated/spent.
  • To meet and interact with other parents.

I can not attend the meetings, but would like to know what was discussed.
Meeting minutes will be posted on our website and also e-mailed to those families that have completed the membership form.

How is ROSCO funded?
ROSCO is funded completely by parent fundraising activities. Typically, there is a large fundraiser in the fall that provides most of the funds for the year. A spring fundraiser may also provide funds. There are also smaller ongoing fundraising activities, such as Market Day, Box Tops, ink cartridge recycling, Dining Out Nights and other miscellaneous items that contribute.

I would rather not participate in a fundraiser that requires me to sell products, how can I contribute?
We understand not everyone is interested in selling products for a variety of reasons. Donations are always accepted and appreciated!

Where does all the fundraising money go?
  • The largest portion of the money we raise goes directly to teachers in the form of teacher and grade allowances. Each teacher is granted a certain amount to spend on their classroom, staff and each grade level is granted money as well.
  • We provide the teachers with luncheons throughout the year (conferences, staff appreciation).
  • We provide Educational Programs for kids that are educational yet fun!
  • We provide bus transportation to the all school movie in Dec. for the Above-The-Line Behavior Reward.
  • We provide snacks on testing day.
  • We provide the 5th graders with a t-shirt, party and gift at the end of the year.
  • A New Family Welcome Dinner is provided for families that are new to the Royal Oaks School, allowing them to meet other families.
  • In 2008-2009, we purchased 3 Smart Boards for use in the classroom!
  • There are many other things as well!

Is ROSCO just a fundraising organization?
Not at all!  ROSCO also:
  • Plans events that foster friendships (1st Day Parent Welcome, New Family Welcome Dinner, Ice Cream Social, Spirit Nights) .
  • Organizes programs and resources to assist parents (Friday Folders, School Directory, School Paks).
  • Organizes programs and resources to assist teachers (Scholastic Book Club, Wish Lists).
  • Coordinates volunteers servicing the Royal Oaks community.
  • Creates the yearbook.

What can I do to help?
  • Attend meetings to find out more information.
  • Volunteer! There are many different opportunities to volunteer throughout the school year. Consider volunteering one hour a week, once a month, or for only one event. No matter how much time you have, we can find a place for you to help out!
  • Easy ways to generate funds are to save Box Tops, specially marked milk caps, Kwik Trip Products, Tyson Labels, Ink Cartridges, etc. Collection boxes are located by the Welcome Center.
  • Another easy way to generate funds is to add Royal Oaks to your Rewards Card at Copps, Target REDcard, and other retailers that may offer donations to schools.

I would like to volunteer, but the committees appear full.
Thanks to the wonderful parent volunteers at Royal Oaks, we are able to fill our Committee Chair positions fairly quickly and easily. Some of the activities happen early in the school year or require early planning, so it is best to fill these positions at the end of the school year for the following year. This doesn’t mean we don’t need help! If you are interested in a specific committee, please contact us and we will find a way for you to help. Otherwise, again, there are many different opportunities that become available throughout the school year.

What is Market Day?
Market Day is a firm that helps schools raise funds for education. A portion of the schools sales go to the school.  They provide over 180 restaurant-quality foods designed to meet busy lifestyles at competitive prices. Products range from butcher shop meats and poultry to easy family meals, delicious appetizers and gourmet desserts.
